Well folks, this fight is just about over. While Adam has stuck with the undefeated champ longer than most, he is finally out of gas.
For a little perspective, his career XP% before this year (96-18) is 97.9%, and since the NFL moved Extra Points out to the 15 yard line for the 2015 season, Adam Vinatieri had still been money. Between 2015 and 2018, Adam's XP% was 94.7%, going 142/150. This year, Adam is 14/20, for a 70% XP completion rate. That's a major drop-off in a single year. Field Goals haven't been much kinder to the future HOFer. Between 1996-2018, Adam Vinatieri's FG% was 84.3%. Then we get to this year, where so far, he is only 14/19. 73.7% Completion rate. This has been his 2nd worst season ever for FG%, the only year he did worse was 2003, where he finished the season 25/34 for a 73.5% rate. At this point, I don't even know if Adam Vinatieri makes it until the end of the season as the Colts place kicker. His Hall of Fame end career will end this year, it's only a question of when. Back in September, he insisted he wasn't retiring. The way he has played this year though, I don't know if he will have much of a choice. "It's better to retire from the NFL a year too early than a year too late." You guys have seen me write that phrase numerous times. I can't think of a non-injury case that this applies to more so than Adam Vinatieri. It's time to call it a career, Adam. - Dave
