LOS ANGELES -- Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana and his wife confronted a home intruder who attempted to kidnap their 9-month-old grandchild over the weekend, law enforcement officials confirmed on Sunday. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Montana told deputies that his grandchild was sleeping in a playpen on Saturday when an unknown woman entered their home in Malibu and grabbed the child. Montana and his wife, Jennifer, confronted the woman, whom authorities later identified as Sodsai Dalzell, tried to "de-escalate the situation" and asked her to give back their grandchild. After a tussle, Jennifer Montana pried the child out of Dalzell's arms, law enforcement officials said. "Thank you to everyone who has reached out," the former San Francisco 49ers star tweeted. "Scary situation, but thankful that everybody is doing well. We appreciate respect for our privacy at this time." The sheriff's office says that Dalzell fled the home but was later arrested. She faces kidnapping and burglary charges. It wasn't immediately known whether Dalzell had a lawyer who could speak on her behalf. The sheriff's office declined to release any more information, citing that the case was still ongoing. Montana, 64, who retired after the 1994 season, played 13 years of his 15 year-career with the 49ers, who won four Super Bowls with him as starting quarterback. Thursday, September 24

- Through 2 games, Russell Wilson has 610 yards, an 82.5% completion rate, 9 TDs and 1 INT, with a QB rating of 140.00. (87.4 QBR using ESPN's formula) Maybe we stop overlooking this guy when we list the absolute best QBs in the game? He isn't flashy, but Russell Wilson can flat out sling a football... - The New York Giants will be without stud RB Saquon Barkley for the rest of the year, as it has been confirmed he did in fact tear his ACL...Things are about to get VERY interesting for their young QB Daniel Jones...Eli Manning might be a little grateful the Giants essentially retired him, because this looks like it could be a LONG season for the G-Men without Barkley... - How bout dem Cowboys? Either the times are a-changing in Dallas without Jason Garrett, or the Atlanta Falcons just showed us that not everything in 2020 is completely upside down...the Falcons blowing huge leads is a sign of normalcy, isn't it? - That was seriously one of the strangest onside kick trajectories I've ever seen. - Speaking of signs of normalcy, the Green Bay Packers destroyed my Detroit Lions, thanks in large part to Lions defenders committing DUMB penalty after DUMB penalty (see my rants in the Week 2 Schedule thread from last week), giving cause for me to invent the hashtag #FatJimSchwartz (at least I think I invented it). This lifetime Lions fan wants to see Matt Patricia shown the door ASAP. Today would be nice. Last week would have been better. - I take back any negative comments I may have made about Justin Herbert before the NFL Draft. After Tyrod Taylor went down, Herbert gave the world champion Chiefs as much as they could handle, and then some. That was one of the best rookie debuts at QB I have ever seen. The Chargers have announced Taylor is still the starter, but after what Herbert did against the Chiefs, Tyrod's leash just got a lot shorter. He struggles at all, the Chargers will have no problem pulling him for Herbert. - Really? You have 1 yard and time for only one play to go to score a touchdown to beat the Seahawks, and you put Cam Newton in a shotgun, making him have to run 5 yards just to even get back to the line of scrimmage? WTF kind of horrible idea was that? Hindsight is 20/20, but seriously, why would you put Newton farther away from the goalline to start, if you are going to QB sneak it? Surely Cam Newton can do the Tom Brady QB Sneak play over the center too...1 yard is a lot closer than 6 yards... - Speaking of Cam Newton, while the Patriots are 1-1, so far, Newton has looked just fine. I think the concerns over his injury have been nullified, and if he keeps playing the way he has so far through two weeks, he is going to get a big fat contract over the offseason from someone. Maybe even NE... - Might watch MNF instead of RAW tonight. SHOCKING I know, but honestly, normally, I will watch wrestling over MNF, unless the matchup is really compelling. Saints/Raiders? Breaking in a brand new stadium, in a brand new NFL town? Pretty compelling. - Josh Allen has 729 yards through two games. Fluke, based on playing Jets and Dolphins, or is the Bills offense seriously trying to imitate Marv's K-Gun offense that Jim Kelly ran, and we can expect more of that? Because honestly? The Bills bringing back the no-huddle K-Gun could be quite fun to watch... - The Browns won the Ohio turd bowl. Yippee. - So, in one game, the 49ers lose Garoppolo, Mostert, and Bosa? OUCH. - Tom Brady didn't look quite so old against the Panthers as he did against the Saints. ***UPDATED to include confirmation of Saquon Barkley's ACL tear*** - Saints WR Michael Thomas is now expected to miss several weeks with an ankle issue. Originally it was thought he'd be back this week.
- He'll be joined by Le'veon Bell on IR for a few weeks. Bell has looked off since he arrived at camp. Kalen Ballage has been signed to replace him. - Mohammed Sanu has signed with the 49ers. - Allen Robinson feels disrespected and wants a trade according to reporters, his agent says it isn't true. He's getting thrown to by Mitch T so I can understand the frustration. - Bengals vs Browns should be an exciting Thursday night game as long as you have sadomasochistic tendencies. TV Viewing: - Fox crushed it with Packers-Vikings and Bucs-Saints while CBS and was the only network to gain viewers from last year. - CBS was only down an average of 12%, which isn't that bad when you look at the awful games they aired. - NBC was down 15% on last year with the Cowboys-Ram compared to Patriots-Steelers last year. - And saving the worst for last, ESPN was down 21% for the Steelers-Giants while the Titans-Broncos matchup was down 38% from the previous year. Maybe some fans come back this week and the numbers are a little higher if maybe some decided to protest the first week and come back the second. The reality is that the longer they stay away the less likely they will come back some day. RaMEMATCHUP TIME (ET) NAT TV

Jim Caldwell went 36-28 as Lions head coach, and we were all told how that wasn't good enough anymore...Last season, they had six 4th quarter leads that they blew. They start this season by blowing another 4th quarter lead. Even if DeAndre Swift catches that ball, the fact remains, the Lions defense, which is Patricia's domain, the thing he is supposed to be a master at coaching, blew a huge lead. Again. Unacceptable.
- Father time asserted himself in a major way in the Saints/Bucs game. Yes, Drew Brees got the win, but let's be honest, this was a defensive game, the offenses were not great. Both Brady and Brees looked...OLD. When was the last time Drew Brees only threw for 160 yards playing in a full game? - Russell Wilson went 31/35 with 322 yards, 4 TDs and no INTs. Hell of a way to start a new football season right there. - It's a completely new day for the Patriots offense...0 passing TDs, but 3 rushing TDs, including 2 from QB Cam Newton? These aren't the same ol' Pats... - Welcome to the NFL, Joe Burrow...sometimes that's how it goes. - The Washington defense got 8 sacks against the Eagles? WHAT? In September 2016, NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick was at the forefront of the social justice movement in the NFL. By October of that year, NFL viewership was down by 11%. Could that happen this season as well? In the 2020 season, the NFL stated that the Black National Anthem will play before the US National Anthem during Week 1. The song “Lift Every Voice And Sing” is often quoted as the Black National Anthem due to its significant role in black culture. While many people see this as the next step to fight racial inequality, there are some who see it as an overreaction from the league in order to compensate for past mistakes in handling the controversial topic. Fans feel that NFLs TV ratings are sure to drop this season, owing to NFLs attempt to promote social justice messages. The NBA has already suffered from a 20% rating decline from previous season as the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement has been promoted left, right and centre by the NBA. With the NFL too deciding to go down that road, they can expect a rating decline in the range of 15-20%. Moreover, NFLs history too suggests that when players take a knee, it does affect its ratings to a certain extent. What happened in the 2016 season when Colin Kaepernick took a knee?In the 2016 preseason, Colin Kaepernick decided to kneel for the national anthem. This was widely unnoticed with Eric Reid being the only other player to “take a knee” in the last game of the preseason. Then some things began to change in Week 1 of the regular season. 11 NFL players have joined him in protest of racial injustice that was present in the country. That number increased throughout the league as more and more players were joining the fight to eradicate police brutality and racism. But reports and surveys showed that although many players were taking a stand on racism, it was affecting viewership in a negative way. In Week 4 of the 2016 season, ratings were down by 11%. An internal memo from NFL Media showed that the cause for this may be due to the presidential election INTERNAL NFL MEMO SENT TO ADDRESS CONCERN AS TO WHY RATINGS THIS SEASON ARE SO FAR DOWN 11% PIC.TWITTER.COM/SITMVECR8Q — DARREN ROVELL (@DARRENROVELL) OCTOBER 7, 2016 However, studies have shown that there may be a different story. A telephone questionnaire showed that 32% are less likely to watch an NFL game due to the protests going on. League executives disagreed on these stances. “There is no evidence that concern over player protests during the national anthem is having any material impact on our ratings. In fact, our own data shows that perception of the NFL and its players is actually up in 2016,” executives wrote in the memo. How will the NFL ratings decline in 2020?In 2020, the NFL admitted to making a mistake and that they will fight for racial equality. The league will be introducing the Black National Anthem during Week 1 of the 2020 season. Many supporters of this move have thought this to be the next step to fight racism. However there is some backlash to this as well. What will be the repercussions? The 2020 season is still in its infancy. There is still no deciding factor as to if the Black National Anthem will cause negative ratings. But there are some fans who aren’t happy with the new move. #BOYCOTTNFL DON’T BLAME COVID-19 WHEN THE RATINGS ARE DOWN. SUPPORT WHATEVER YOU WANT OFF THE FIELD, BUT DON’T FORCE IT UPON YOUR FANS DURING GAMES. STAND FOR THE FLAG, RESPECT YOUR COUNTRY, PLAY BALL, AND REPRESENT WHATEVER YOU LIKE OFF THE FIELD HTTPS://T.CO/HSYINNMSKT — WILLY (@WILLY42410210) SEPTEMBER 10, 2020 The NFL will just have to see if this move in the fight for racial inequality will be met with as much criticism as it was in the 2016 season. or more. My guess is that there is a 12-15% drop in viewers this year. I think it will end up being pretty significant. www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/29847632/qb-drew-brees-says-borrowed-saints-enter-super-bowl-bust-season Mike Triplett ESPN Staff Writer METAIRIE, La. -- Drew Brees has not officially declared this his final NFL season. But like the rest of his New Orleans Saints teammates, the quarterback is not shying away from characterizing this as a "Super Bowl or bust" season. "Hey, at this time, man, I'm on borrowed time," the 41-year-old said on the eve of his 20th season. "I've got nothing to lose. So I'm turning it loose and letting the chips fall where they may." The Saints have won more regular-season games than any team in the NFL over the past three seasons (11-5, 13-3, 13-3), only to suffer three gut-wrenching playoff defeats in the final seconds (the "Minneapolis Miracle," the "No-call" and an overtime loss to the Minnesota Vikings last season). Brees, who will be an analyst for NBC after he retires, said he is hoping the previous playoff failures are just the prologue to a second Super Bowl title before he rides off into the sunset. "I know that everything happens for a reason, and in most cases, failure is your best teacher," said Brees, who was the MVP of Super Bowl XLIV in February 2010. "That's the approach I've always taken, and that's the approach this team has taken. And I feel like we've found a way to garner strength from each one of these moments over these last few years. And it's only made us better." The Saints backed up that mentality by aggressively -- but unsuccessfully -- pursuing free-agent defensive end Jadeveon Clowney over the weekend, despite having so little salary-cap space that they would have needed to use a unique sign-and-trade idea to make it happen. Pro Bowl left tackle Terron Armstead specifically declared this as a "Super Bowl or bust" season at the start of training camp. And when asked about it the other day, he said, "I said it. I'm standing on it for sure. What else are we playing for? That's it; that's the only goal. Especially for a team that really feels like we can do it. "For everyone involved, every player, family, city, we need this," Armstead said. "That's what we're going for." The Saints aren't the only NFL team taking that approach this season. Their opponent on Sunday, the NFC South rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers, just signed 43-year-old quarterback Tom Brady and lured tight end Rob Gronkowski out of retirement to try to make the playoffs for the first time since 2006. This will be the first game in NFL history in which both starting quarterbacks are over the age of 40. "I've always used the term 'prolong your prime,'" Brees said of the health and wellness techniques that have allowed both future Hall of Famers to extend their careers for so long. "At the end of the day, that's what we're trying to do. Father Time's gonna get us at some point, but we're trying to beat him out right now." Saints coach Sean Payton, who has been answering questions about Brees' remarkable longevity for years, loves to make the comparison to an old picture of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Len Dawson smoking a cigarette at halftime of Super Bowl I -- and how times have changed since then. "[Brady and Brees have] really kind of broken the rules relative to age and how far they've gone into their careers," Payton said. "And I think you'll continue to see that more and more. We know more now relative to recovery; we know more now relative to sleep and nutrition, and I think we'll point to two players like that. "And I just think the drive, the determination, the skill set -- and when you put all those things together, you get rare, rare players." One of those wellness techniques is Brady's TB12 supplement line, which Payton shared an anecdote about on Wednesday. "Tom's got that whole TB12 line. He had me buying the water in the offseason and it was fantastic," Payton said with a chuckle. "Only the emails don't stop coming. And I told him, 'Can you stop sending me emails?' And then he purposely went to the company and now they're doubled. Every morning I wake up, I've gotta erase about 15 TB12 emails." |
