First, it was the record store. Now, Vic Fangio is tearing down the barbershop.
Almost a month after banning music from training camp, the first-year Denver Broncos coach took to the podium Tuesday and declared yet another change for his players to abide by. His latest decree? Doing away with the long-running tradition of crazy rookie haircuts. "I just don't think it's right. I just don't believe in hazing," Fangio said, via The Athletic's Nicki Jhabvala. "There are traditions that stay put. Guys are getting up in front of the team and doing a little skit every night. Maybe a rookie's carrying somebody's pads off the field and so on, or bringing in the doughnuts or the breakfast. But nothing physical." In a world where athletes check social media at halftime, the music decision probably rubbed some players the wrong way. Given the haircut imagerywe've seen over the years, though, this latest news is bound to have some supporters, likely all from the Broncos' 2019 rookie class. Linebacker Bradley Chubb, an unwilling participant in 2018's ritual, was quick to voice displeasure over the fact that he won't get the chance to exact some revenge. A tough blow for the former fifth overall pick but it sounds like something he'll eventually be able to get over. "Oh man you saw my haircut last year, I wanted to get somebody back this year so bad," Chubb said, per Mike Klis of 9News. "But it's all good. It grew back so I'm not too mad anymore."

Colts quarterback Andrew Luck has been out of practice with what the team has described as a calf injury. But now Colts owner Jim Irsay has chimed in with a different diagnosis.
Irsay said on SiriusXM NFL Radio that Luck is dealing with an issue to a “small little bone.” The calf is a muscle, not a bone. Irsay’s comment suggests that Luck actually has two injuries, the calf injury that the team had previously disclosed, and a bone injury that hadn’t been reported until Irsay mentioned it. Irsay did not specify what part of the body this “little bone” injury is in. Irsay did say, “I really feel very confident that he’s going to find his way through this thing,” but then again Irsay was confident that Luck wouldn’t miss any regular-season games after his 2017 shoulder surgery, and Luck ended up missing the entire season. There’s no reason to think Luck’s current injury is that serious, but there are also increasing reasons to think the current injury is more serious than the Colts let on. He now appears unlikely to play at all in the preseason. Time will tell if he’s ready to go for the regular season. https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2019/08/13/jim-irsay-andrew-luck-has-bone-injury/ The Oakland Raiders will be without Nevin Lawson for the first part of the 2019 season.
Per NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, Lawson has been suspended four games for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances. The cornerback was informed of the impending suspension last week, Rapoport adds. Lawson signed with the Raiders in March, following his release from the Detroit Lions. Over his five-year career, Lawson has started 54 games (14 in 2018), recorded 194 tackles and one sack. Lawson will miss the Raiders' regular season opener against the Broncos and tilts with the Chiefs, Vikings and Colts. This is still developing: Multiple sources are claiming that Cowboys QB Dak Prescott has turned down an offer that would pay him $30 million a year, and is demanding $40 million. However, ProFootballTalk acknowledges the rejection of the offer, but claims he isn't demanding $40 million...
However, Jane Slater, who is a reporter for the NFL Network, says she got confirmation on the $40 million, and the NFL's Twitter account retweeted her, so take that for what you will... So, working on the assumption that this is true, that Dak is asking for $40,000,000 a year, I can only say this: ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME? ROFLMAO Giants wide receiver Amba Etta-Tawo was already hurt.
Now he’s out for the year. The team announced that the journeyman wideout tore his Achilles in practice today. He didn’t play in the preseason opener against the Jets because of a hamstring injury. Etta-Tawo played for two colleges (Maryland and Syracuse), and worked in two professional leagues (AAF and NFL) but hasn’t played in a regular season game. He has spent time with the Jaguars, Chiefs, and Texans, and two stints with the Giants. He was on their practice squad in 2017 and re-signed in July when injuries piled up. Now, he’s among them. profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2019/08/12/giants-wideout-tears-achilles-in-practice/
The first preseason game does not normally include many starters so it isn't normally the most catastrophic for a season. Most teams will player their starters for the first half of the third game so you still have two weeks to worry about injuries to players who you may recognize and may actually hurt your teams chances this year. That being said, Jermaine Kearse is the first name player to have his season ended, but he won't be the last.
Jermaine Kearse was hoping for a bounce-back season. It didn't last one preseason drive. The Detroit Lions receiver suffered a broken leg and associated injuries to his ankle, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, per a source. Kearse was rolled up on the Lions' first drive of the preseason opener versus the New England Patriots. He left on a cart with his leg in an air cast. The 29-year-old had been the Lions' top reserve receiver during training camp, according to reporters in Detroit. Instead of shining in that role to get his career back on track, Kearse will spend 2019 in rehab after the brutal injury. The other injuries we're from Thursday's games: 1. New York Jets right guard Brian Winters left his team's preseason opener against the New York Giants with a shoulder injury. 2. Houston Texans receiver Keke Coutee was carted off the field against the Green Bay Packers with an apparent ankle injury. Rapoport reported the injury was not considered a major one. 3. Philadelphia Eagles backup quarterback Nate Sudfeld was taken off the field in a cart after suffering a broken left wrist. Coach Doug Pederson told reporters after the game Sudfeld would have surgery on Friday, but added that the injury was not season-ending. 4. Carolina Panthers tight end Ian Thomas suffered a rib injury against the Chicago Bears. 5. Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Conor McDermott was evaluated for a head injury. 6. Seattle Seahawks offensive tackle George Fant left Thursday's game with an ankle injury and his return is doubtful. Running back Bo Scarbrough left in the second half with a hand injury. Antonio Brown got what he wanted, and the Raiders should have known what they were getting.
Chase Williams of WPXI, the NBC affiliate in Pittsburgh, has reported that Brown already has gone “radio silent” on the Raiders, as he obtains treatment away from the team on feet that were frostbitten last month in a cryotherapy chamber. Here’s the specific content of the tweet from Williams: “10 practices into training camp and Antonio Brown has already gone ‘radio silent’ with the Raiders. They have zero clue where he is or what the progress of the foot injury is.” It’s impossible to know whether this report is accurate, in part because no one connected to the team is publicly saying anything about Brown’s injury. It had seemed that the Raiders were mum in order to avoid making Brown look bad or foolish for freezing his feet; maybe the Raiders are saying nothing because there’s nothing to say, and because they just don’t know what’s going on. If the report is accurate, folks in Pittsburgh will shed no tears over this development, given the manner in which Brown behaved at the end of his nine-year run with the team. Folks in Oakland will be dismayed by the situation, but they shouldn’t be. Brown wasn’t punished but rewarded for quitting on his team in Week 17. There’s no reason to think that he learned any lesson from his final days with the Steelers because, at the end of the day, he won. https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2019/08/09/report-antonio-brown-goes-radio-silent-on-raiders/ |
