In the first blockbuster deal of 2021, Matthew Stafford and Jared Goff are switching teams. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Detroit is dealing Stafford to the Rams in exchange for two future first-round picks, a third-round pick and Goff.
Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports it’s a third-round choice in 2021, a first-round choice in 2022 and a first-round choice in 2023. The trade will not become official until the start of the league year March 17. News of the trade comes only a few hours after Dan Campbell said trade talks were “hot and heavy” with all signs pointing to a deal getting completed before the Super Bowl. The Lions and Stafford mutually agreed to a trade of the quarterback, and it didn’t take long after the end of the season to get it done. Stafford, who turns 33 next month, was the No. 1 overall choice in 2009. He has passed for 45,109 yards and 282 touchdowns and is 74-90-1 in his 12-year career. The Rams refused to give Goff a vote of confidence after the loss to the Packers in the playoffs. It had become obvious the Rams no longer wanted to be on the hook for Goff’s contract, which carries more than $43 million in fully guaranteed payments in 2021 and 2022. Goff, 26, was the No. 1 overall choice in 2016. He has passed for 18,171 yards and 107 touchdowns, has a 42-27 record in the regular season and has started a Super Bowl. Thoughts: Rams: The Rams have mortgaged their future all in on Stafford. This is a boom or bust move similar to the Broncos years ago in bringing an an established QB to try and get the team over the hump. There is a lot going in return for Stafford but part of that is the payoff for taking Goff's contract off their hands. Stafford is entering the second half of his career and while he could still play for another 5-7 years, he isn't a 25 year old spring chicken anymore. Lions: I like it. The Lions are setting themselves up to compete in the post-Aaron Rodgers world with a bunch of draft picks. This is a pretty good draft year coming up and they'll have some space to have a quicker turnaround than they would have with Stafford and fewer picks.
Comments
Apparently, Matt Stafford has asked the Detroit Lions to trade him, and the Detroit Lions are going to accommodate his request. Intellectually, I understand that this offseason is probably the single best time to trade Stafford in his entire 12 year career. There is so much QB uncertainty with so many different NFL teams, that a Stafford trade will likely command a king's fortune. The Lions are very likely to get multiple high draft picks for Stafford. The market is primed for him to command the best trade possible. Mentally, I understand that.
But, if you guys know anything about me, you know that emotionally, I HATE this news. Matt Stafford, to put it simply, IS MY DUDE. Of course I don't want the Lions to trade him. I don't EVER want to see Matt Stafford wearing another team's uniform. I want Matt Stafford to play for Detroit until he is too old to throw a football, or is Tom Brady's age, whichever comes first. Thank you, Matt Stafford. It will be heartbreaking to see you wear another team's uniform, but I hope you find nothing but success wherever you end up...Unless it's the Bears. Get traded to Chicago and you are dead to me... God bless you in the next chapter of your career. Let me start by saying that despite the constant graphics that show where Drew Brees and Tom Brady rank against each other all time, that Drew Brees' career doesn't need to be validated by comparing him to Tom Brady, nor does Tom Brady's career need to be validated by comparing him to Drew Brees. The graphics that show Brady and Brees as #1 and #2 in all those categories, while fun to look at, are ultimately irrelevant. It doesn't matter which one is #1 or #2 in any particular category. Both of their legacies are sealed. Chances are, that Drew Brees walked off the field for the last time as an active football player. Barring being named as a replacement Pro Bowl player, he will likely never throw another professional pass. Tom Brady is still going, his Tampa Bay Buccaneers are playing the Green Bay Packers this weekend. But, who knows how much longer he will keep playing either? He is signed with Tampa through next year, but let's be honest here...Tom Brady continues to play for no other reason than he enjoys it, not because he needs to earn a salary. He could walk away, and not miss the remaining money on his contract one bit. If he decides it's just not as easy to get up and train any more, that it takes a lot longer to stretch his middle aged muscles, two of the greatest QBs any of us will ever see in our lifetimes, could be gone in the same offseason. Losing Drew Brees is a massive loss to the NFL. Losing both Brees and Brady in the same year would be devastating. OK...now that my QBcrush session has gotten a bit lengthy...how about those Conference Championship games? Jets: Robert Saleh
The Jets have hired Robert Saleh as their new head coach, his deal is for five years. Saleh, 41, will become the 20th head coach in franchise history. He replaces Adam Gase, whom the team fired Jan. 3 after two seasons. Saleh has served as the 49ers’ defensive coordinator since 2017. He is expected to take 49ers passing game coordinator Mike LaFleur with him as his offensive coordinator, Schefter reports. LaFleur is the brother of Packers head coach Matt LaFleur. The Jets also have held virtual interviews with Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, Panthers offensive coordinator Joe Brady, Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, Saints secondary coach Aaron Glenn, former Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis, Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith and Rams defensive coordinator Brandon Staley. Jaguars: Urban Meyer The Jaguars’ search for a new coach focused on Urban Meyer. He has accepted the job. The team announced the hire on Thursday. “This is a great day for Jacksonville and Jaguars fans everything,” owner Shad Khan said in a statement. “Urban Meyer is who we want and need, a leader, winner and champion who demands excellence and produces resulted. While Urban already enjoys a legacy in the game of football that few will ever match, his passion for the opportunity in front of him here in Jacksonville is powerful and unmistakable. I am proud to name Urban Meyer the new head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.” Meyer, 56, has no NFL coaching experience in a career that began in 1985. He was, however, wildly successful at the college level. Whether that success becomes duplicated at the NFL level remains to be seen. Many already wonder whether he’ll become the next Nick Saban, an impeccable college coach who quickly realizes that the pro game presents much greater parity and much stiffer challenges when it comes to putting together a great team. Meyer becomes the seventh coach in franchise history. Only one — Tom Coughlin — finished his tenure with a winning record. --------------------------------------------------------------- Thoughts. - Saleh had been a name for a while. I'm not overly impressed by him so far as he reminds me a lot of Mike Singletary as a coach with too much yelling. Supposedly he is a Pete Carroll type motivator but we'll have to see if the positive yelling is a benefit to the team. Jets have two first round picks (2 and 23) - Meyer is an interesting hirer. The Jaguars will get the best QB prospect since Andrew Luck and $70 million in cap space so I can see the interest. the Jaguars have 11 picks in the draft, with two in the first and two in the second (1, 21(t), 33, and 45). - I continue to be surprised that Eric Bienemy can't get a HC job. He's been the most talked about name for the last two years but then they go in different directions. He has to be interviewing awfully. The Texans had previously not requested an interview, then Watson threw a hissy fit and now the Texans are interviewing Bienemy. At this point, I wouldn't be shocked if the Texans hire Bienemy just to place nice with Watson. Which they need to because the Texans are screwed for the next few years from the screwing Bill O'Brien gave them in his last two years there. - Speaking of O'Brien, Bill is in talks to be the new offensive coordinator at Alabama. Because when you suck at coaching, you need to attend the Nick Saban Coach Rehabilitation Clinic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TepQfqURyY - While it was the last game played, we gotta start with the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers. So, the Browns couldn't practice, had no coach all week, had to go on the road to Three Rivers, and what did they do? 28-0 at the end of the 1st quarter. Now, the Steelers kind of, sort of, made a game of it, but it was too little, too late. The Browns steamrolled them in the 1st half, and they had no answer. Big Ben ended up with 4 TDs and 500 yards to go with his 4 INTs, but that was mostly just garbage time stats. Officially, the Browns only won by 11, but let's be honest...they flat out kicked the Steelers asses.
- The Chicago Bears should count themselves damn lucky this game was only lost by 12 points. The Bears defense is the only reason this wasn't a blowout. The Chicago Bears have one of the worst offenses in the entire NFL, and were completely carried by their defense all year...but that formula doesn't work quite as well against a team like the Saints. You knew New Orleans would put up some points, and once they did, you knew the game was over, because there was no way the Bears offense could match... - Not a fantastic passing day by the 2019 MVP Lamar Jackson, but he had a pretty damn good day rushing to make up for it. There was some criticism for the Ravens players that met at the Titans 50-yard line, but the Titans did this to the Ravens on their own 50 during the regular season, so fair is fair. The Ravens didn't finish anything the Titans didn't start. Is Baltimore/Tennessee now the best non-divisional rivalry in the entire NFL? - Where the hell did Taylor Heinicke come from??? He was the only reason the Buccaneers didn't just massacre the Washington football team. I was rooting for Tampa, to hopefully set up Brady/Brees III, but when the game ended, I legitimately gave Heinicke an clapping ovation. Dude was simply fantastic. I don't know what his contract situation is, but I wouldn't be surprised if he is still on the team during training camp, if Ron Rivera doesn't seriously open up the QB position competition to at least give him the chance to earn the starting spot. - Rams/Seahawks...I think the only thing I can say about this game, is the Rams DL are the MVPs of it. They gave Russell Wilson FITS, were in his face the entire game. I truly think Russell Wilson was flat out unprepared for the pure pressure the Rams defense put on him. Very impressive performance by Los Angeles. - The Bills won a close game...but maybe that's what they needed to do, after just destroying the Dolphins last week. You don't want to get overly confident to the point you feel you are invincible, and the fight the Colts put up should scare the Bills into making sure they are fully prepared for the Ravens. Anything less than being fully prepared could put the Ravens in the AFC title game. Divisional Round Matchups: Saturday, January 16 4:35pm: Los Angeles Rams at Green Bay Packers (FOX) 8:15pm: Baltimore Ravens at Buffalo Bills (NBC) Sunday, January 17 3:05pm: Cleveland Browns at Kansas City Chiefs (CBS) 6;40pm: Tampa Bay Buccaneers at New Orleans Saints (FOX) The Chatters family of websites doesn't care if you are a Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Socialist, Anarchist, or whatever. Watching the news recently, there are many that believe the United States is permanently divided. That no matter what, there is no common ground between Democrats and Republicans, and that they are at war with each other. The same people preaching "unity" on one day, preach violent rhetoric the next. They want you to believe that battle lines have been drawn, and you must pick a side.
FUCK THOSE PEOPLE. The Chatters family of websites, NFL Chatters, NCAA Chatters, Garbage-Time, etc has been, and will continue to be, a place where we all can get together and talk about things that interest us. We have always strived to be a place where football fans from every background can feel welcome to put aside whatever differences they have, and enjoy talking to other football fans. It has never, and will never matter, if you are conservative, liberal, rich, poor, gay, straight, male, female, black, white, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist or other, WE DON'T CARE. If you want to talk about football (or wrestling, or whatever off-topic stuff threads get created for), it's cool. All are welcome. Voted for Biden? Cool. Voted for Trump? Cool. Voted for Pedro? Cool. Sports fandom is all-inclusive. As long as you don't act like a total jackass and start insulting and trolling people just to be a dick, you are always welcome here. Four players are finalists in their 1st year of eligibility, and honestly? You can make a strong case that all four should be included in the five players that will eventually be selected:
Peyton Manning Charles Woodson Calvin Johnson Jared Allen The other 11 finalists are: Ronde Barber Tony Boselli LeRoy Butler Alan Faneca Torry Holt John Lynch Clay Matthews, Jr Sam Mills Richard Seymour Zach Thomas Reggie Wayne - Different game, same ol' horsecrap. Nobody believes the NFL's explanation for that roughing the passer call in the Lions/Viking game. Lions/Refs is still the greatest rivalry in all of sports. Also, thanks Matt Patricia, for assembling the single worst Lions defense in history...appreciate that.
- There are rumors that Matt Stafford just played his last game in Detroit, as the thought is, whoever the new coach is, will want to replace him with their own guy...WHO? Who are they going to get that is as tough, or as good as Matt Stafford is? Any incoming coach to the Lions should be thankful that the Lions DON'T need a QB, and it's one less thing they have to worry about. New coach already has to rebuild the entire defense, why add finding a replacement QB for Stafford to that list? That is, if the Lions trade Stafford, or if new coach decides to dump him, I will be PISSED. - 56 points? What the hell, Buffalo? Why didn't we see 56 points a game when Jim Kelly was running the K-gun? If the Bills offense continues to be that efficient, they are absolutely a legitimate Super Bowl contender. AFC title game rematch between the Bills and Chiefs, anyone? - The Cleveland Browns qualified for the Playoffs for the first time since 2002. - The Washington Football Team winning the NFC East at 7-9 is pretty bad...but if the Eagles had won that game, the NFC East could have been represented by a 6-10 team...wasted opportunity, lol - 43 years old, 399 yards, 4 TDs. So, Tom Brady, who is having a "down" year, finishes the regular season #3 in passing yards. #2 in passing TDs, with a 102.2 QB rating, and a 65.7% completion percentage...Most NFL QBs would kill to have "down" years like that. - Every indication points to the next Colts loss as being Philip Rivers' last game in the NFL. The QB himself has openly talked about retiring at the end of this season. Then, the debate becomes whether or not Rivers is a Hall of Fame player or not...but that's a topic for another day. - When asked about the QB change from Jalen Hurts to Nate Sudfeld, Eagles coach Doug Pederson said he was "coaching to win". In Pederson's mind, "Coaching to win" doesn't involve Carson Wentz at all, to the point Wentz was actually listed as being inactive for the game, rather than just being listed as the 2nd or even 3rd stringer. He's a goner. No way in hell Wentz ever wears the Eagles jersey again. And now, for the playoffs: Saturday, January 9th 1:05 PM Indianapolis Colts at Buffalo Bills 4:40 PM Los Angeles Rams at Seattle Seahawks 8:15 PM Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Washington Football Team Sunday, January 10th 1:05 PM Baltimore Ravens at Tennessee Titans 4:40 PM Chicago Bears at New Orleans Saints 8:15 PM Cleveland Browns at Pittsburgh Steelers |
