I was curious about how the actual in-stadium attendances were for the XFL versus what the AAF did last year, as a way to judge the overall potential viability of the league, outside of the better financial backing and TV deals. That is, what do the fans think about each league?
In the 8 weeks that the AAF was in operation, it drew a total of 489,330 fans into the stadiums to watch their games, for a weekly average of 61,167, or about 15,300 fans per game. Through 4 weeks, the XFL has already brought 298,249 fans through the gates, and is averaging 74,562 fans per week, and 18,641 fans per game. Significantly higher numbers than the AAF managed. The XFL is drawing ~3,400 more fans every single game they play, an additional ~14,000 fans every week. Ok, but that was through 8 weeks, after people really figured out the AAF sucked...where were they after the same 4 weeks the XFL has played? Through Week 4, the AAF had 249,971 fans attend games, 48,271 less than the XFL has gotten...12,069 less per week, 3,018 less per game. Even if we completely take out the TV ratings and better financing the XFL has, the fans have bought into the XFL a lot more than than they did the AAF. The XFL is getting 120% of the attendance the AAF saw. Fans simply like the XFL, like the quality of the games more.
