We now know that the injury Brees suffered in the game against the 49ers yesterday was actually pretty serious. He broke three ribs on the left, two on the right, and suffered a collapsed lung...and that's while wearing a QB flak jacket for protection. If he hadn't been wearing that, God only knows how serious Brees could have gotten injured.
I've had broken ribs. They take a while to heal. With five of them, plus a collapsed lung, it wouldn't surprise me if even counting a playoff run, Drew's season is over. I would actually be surprised to see him step foot on a football field this year again. But, assuming this is most likely a season ending injury, could it also be a career ending injury? Drew has a clause in his contract that lets him out of his contract this offseason, and has previously made comments about being on "borrowed time". There are also reports that he actually planned on retiring last year, after the Pro Bowl he supposedly informed the Saints of his decision to retire, only to change his mind. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/29872193/sources-drew-brees-told-new-orleans-saints-planned-retire-last-nfl-offseason-changed-mind So, if you are Drew Brees, what do you do now? You can come back for one more year. His contract includes the 2021 season, so if he chose to, he still has a job. However, with an injury like that, would it be worth it? The 2021 season is worth 25 million dollars. That's a lot of cash...but then again, Drew Brees has already made over 10x that amount in his career, not counting any of his endorsement deals, and he will be offered a TV job exactly 5 minutes after he announces his retirement...To put it simply, as weird it is to say that someone doesn't need another 25 million bucks, Drew Brees actually doesn't really need 25 million more dollars...If he came back to play next season, to finish out his contract, it would be pride that drives him, not the money. Should Drew Brees decide to retire, while it's not the way most players would choose, you don't always get to choose. Sometimes playing in the NFL retires you before you can retire from playing in the NFL. But, if we have seen the last of Drew Brees as an NFL Quarterback, I'd argue that he can retire without any regrets at all. His career speaks for itself, you guys all know where he stands as far as passing yards, etc, no need to list all of his accomplishments here. The only reason I can see for him to come back for the 2021 season is that it allows him the chance to be able to retire on his own terms, rather than be forced into it due to injury. If that is what drives him, clearly, he will be back. But if that's something he doesn't care about, I think we just saw the end of a HOF career.
